
On September 3rd, the Hong Kong Census and Statistics Department released statistics on incoming ships, port cargo, and containers in Hong Kong for the first half of 2024.
In the first half of this year, Hong Kong Port achieved a cargo throughput of 88.6 million tons, a year-on-year increase of 3.4%. Among them, the import and export volumes of goods were 56.1 million tons and 32.5 million tons, respectively, an increase of 2.8% and 4.3% year-on-year.
In the second quarter, Hong Kong Port achieved a cargo throughput of 45.8 million tons, an increase of 2.9% compared to the same period last year. Among them, the import and export volumes of goods were 28.6 million tons and 17.2 million tons respectively, an increase of 0.9% and 6.5% year-on-year.
In terms of containers, Hong Kong Port completed a container throughput of 3.44 million TEUs in the second quarter, a year-on-year decrease of 6.6%. Among them, heavy and empty containers completed 2.73 million TEUs and 710000 TEUs respectively, a decrease of 5.9% and 9.3%. In heavy containers, the import and export containers were 1.47 million TEUs and 1.26 million TEUs, respectively, a decrease of 6.1% and 5.8%.
In terms of incoming ships, there were 4565 ocean going vessels arriving in the second quarter of 2024 compared to the same period last year, a year-on-year decrease of 4.6%. At the same time, there were 20850 inland river vessels arriving in Hong Kong, an increase of 13% year-on-year.
