At 11:00 am on December 19th, the Brazilian ore ship, loaded with about 400000 tons of iron ore, successfully docked at berth 88 of Lianyungang Port. This is the first time in Jiangsu Province that a 400000 ton fully loaded ship has docked, marking that Lianyungang Port officially has the berthing and unloading capacity of a 400000 ton ultra large bulk cargo ship. It has a huge promoting effect on further optimizing the strategic layout of the national foreign trade import iron ore transportation system and enhancing Lianyungang Port's ability to serve the Yangtze River Delta and the areas along the Longhai Railway.

It is reported that this "giant" is 362 meters long and has a draft of 22.9 meters when entering the port. The 390900 tons of iron ore carried on board will be unloaded at Lianyungang Port and transported to the Yangtze River Delta and the areas along the Longhai Railway through sea rail intermodal transportation and other means.

In order to ensure the smooth entry and exit of the giant ship, the Lianyungang Maritime Bureau has organized pilot, port terminal, ship agency, surveying and mapping units to develop various safety assurance plans in advance, providing safe cruising and escort support for the ship throughout the entire process. The successful berthing of a 400000 ton fully loaded ore ship has set a new record for the maximum draft and single vessel operation of incoming ships since the opening of Lianyungang Port.

For a long time, with the strong support of national, provincial, and municipal transportation authorities, as well as maritime, customs, border inspection, pilot and other port units, the unloading capacity of ships at Lianyungang Port has been continuously improved.

In September 2023, the completion and acceptance of the renovation and expansion project of the ore terminal in the Qitai operation area further improved the port's supporting service capacity. In December of the same year, the second phase of the 300000 ton waterway project at Lianyungang Port was completed and accepted. As a "bull nose" project developed along the coast of Jiangsu, the completion and opening of a 300000 ton waterway has made a qualitative leap in the unloading capacity of large ships at Lianyungang Port.

At present, Lianyungang Port has formed a comprehensive collection and distribution system that integrates railways, highways, and water transportation. Through sea rail intermodal transportation, sea river intermodal transportation, and road rail water intermodal transportation, it can radiate to steel mills in central and western regions such as Henan, Shanxi, Shaanxi, and Gansu along the Longhai line. Water transportation can cover the Yangtze River Basin, coastal areas, Japan, South Korea, and other places.

As the first 400000 ton ore terminal in Jiangsu Province, its completion and operation will further enhance the handling capacity of Lianyungang Port's foreign trade iron ore transportation, effectively connect the trade between inland provinces and countries along the "the Belt and Road", and make greater contributions to promoting domestic and international double circulation.

"The 400000 ton ore terminal at Lianyungang Port is currently one of the largest bulk cargo terminal berths in the world, fully adapting to the trend of large-scale ship development, which is conducive to further reducing comprehensive logistics costs." Zhang Debin, the person in charge of Lianyungang Xinsu Port Terminal Company, said that the normal operation of the large terminal not only provides important support for the increase of cargo volume at Lianyungang Port, It will also provide a more convenient channel for steel mills in the Yangtze River Delta and Longhai areas to import raw materials, help Lianyungang Port accelerate its integration into the development of the Yangtze River Delta, make full use of the Longhai Line, and fully leverage its international hub port function.
